KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is likely to extend the term of the controversial chief executive of Petronas, the state-owned oil company, by two years.

Neither the government nor the oil company, formally Petroliam Nasional, would confirm the offer made to Shamsul Azhar Abbas, who has also served as president since 2010. But the extension, confirmed by a senior executive, is expected to be announced in the new year.
