Residents of Matunga (East) have complained that the entire Five Gardens area at the F-north ward at Lady Jehangir Road does not have a proper, usable toilet. This is despite the fact that the civic body had recently revamped the heritage gardens at a cost of Rs5.25 crore.

BMC yet to utilise 78% of budget
In fact, recently, after it came to light that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is yet to use 78 per cent of this year's budget for the different civic infrastructural work, residents have demanded that the some amount from the budget should be utilised in constructing a proper toilet in the area.

Thousands come for walks
Civic activist Nikhil Desai said at least a thousand people come to the Five Gardens everyday for a walk. "There is only one toilet near one of the gardens, but that is in a pathetic condition. Not only it is stinking all the time, but the men's urinals also do not have water connection. It is sad that despite spending such a huge amount on refurbishing Five Gardens, this basic facility has not been provided for," said Desai.

BMC promised '5-star' toilet
He added that two years ago, the then additional municipal commissioner Aseem Gupta along with former mayor Sunil Prabhu had visited the area and had promised a 'five star' loo in place of the existing one. "Forget that, a basic, clean toilet has also not been provided by the civic body," said Desai.

What did the revamp include?
The beautification plan of Five Gardens was designed as per the recommendations of the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee, which started in January this year. A fountain in one of the gardens, playing equipment for kids, a recharge ring well to increase underground water levels in the surroundings, chowkies for gardeners, a drinking water facility for people, pavement repairs were some of
the changes which were brought about as part of the revamp plan.

Additional municipal commissioner SVR Srinivas was not available for comments despite repeated calls and messages.
