The rift within the Congress over the moves to dilute the party’s stance on the bar licence issue came to the fore on Sunday with senior Congress leader M.M. Hassan criticising Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president V.M. Sudheeran for making open remarks against the Cabinet decision to go in for certain amendments to the liquor policy.
Mr. Sudheeran’s statement strongly criticising the decision of the United Democratic Front (UDF) Cabinet on the need to introduce amendments to its liquor policy was unbecoming of the position held by him as KPCC president, Mr. Hassan, told reporters at the Government Guest House here.
Mr. Sudheeran’s remarks very much deviated from the party’s known stance, Mr. Hassan, also a KPCC vice president, said.
Mr. Hassan urged Mr. Sudheeran to come forward to correct his stand.
The Congress party stands for total prohibition. However, the party heading a coalition government would have to face certain constraints to accommodate the varying opinions of other ruling partners, Mr. Hassan said.
