Sanjay Kumar Tiwari (40),
SHO of Isuapur police station in
Saran district, was shot dead by a youth he was frisking near Shyam Kauriya railway crossing on Monday.
Sources said Tiwari, acting on a tip-off, went out looking for three youths who were planning to loot an SBI van carrying cash from
Chhapra. He took a lift in the car of
Pratik Kumar Singh, a local medical practitioner, and reached the Shyam Kauria SBI branch.
He began to frisk the youths while they were waiting on a bike near the crossing.
Singh saw one of the youths taking out a pistol. Before he could alert the SHO, the youth fired at Tiwari, killing him on the spot.
Singh took Tiwari to his father’s clinic at Isuapur from where he was moved to Chhapra sadar hospital. The SHO was declared brought dead.
Local shopkeepers downed their shutters demanding immediate arrest of the criminals. Saran SP Satyaveer Singh said the SHO was an honest and popular officer.
IG (CID) Vinay Kumar reached Chhapra with a forensic team.
