MUMBAI: Ten days after
Gulzar Azmi, secretary of Jamiat-ul-Ulema’s legal cell, received threat calls allegedly from a fugitive gangster, the JJ Marg police on Monday registered an FIR against the elusive goon. The police has named
Ravi Pujari in the FIR and booked him for criminal intimidation.
Azmi had earlier said that he felt there was a connection between the threat call and a senior state BJP leader’s allegation against Azmi linking him with the Dawood Ibrahim gang.
The FIR does not mention the name of the BJP leader. “Last week, I received a call and the caller said he was Ravi Pujari. He threatened me and asked to stop defending innocent Muslim boys arrested for their alleged involvement in the terror cases. He said if I didn’t stop defending these youths, I will be shot down. I said I am ready to receive martyrdom,” said 83-year-old Azmi.
It may be recalled that advocate
Shahid Azmi, 33, who was representing dozen of Muslim youths in terror cases, was shot down by a group of gangsters in 2010. The gangster had told several media channels that he didn’t like Shahid’s work of defending Muslim boys. Ansari had represented around 40 people in various terror cases. He had played an important role in getting Faheem Ansari, a 26/11 suspected conspirator, acquitted. The police pursued the case of Ansari till SC but he was acquitted at all the stages.
