Rohingya escape Phangnga centre

PHANGNGA — Police are looking for 10 Rohingya migrants who fled from a detention centre in Muang district of this southern province early Monday.

The 10, all men, fled from the central Phangnga immigration office at 2.30am and none of them had been recaptured by immigration authorities as of Monday evening.

The detainees reportedly climbed through ceiling tiles from a toilet on the second floor of the building and went up to the roof. They then climbed down to the top of a concrete wall close to the building facade, using a rope made of blankets.

Authorities believe they have not made it far and are searching for them.

The detention centre houses 163 illegal migrants including 163 Rohingya and Bangladeshis, 23 Myanmar nationals and one Lao citizen.
