How Guardians of the Galaxy's Credits Scene Happened

'Guardians of the Galaxy' nearly had an 'Avengers'-related post-credits scene, director James Gunn has revealed.

Speaking to Jeff Goldsmith on his podcast, Gunn revealed that they had to think on their feet to find a credits scene that would work - after the scene intended for them was instead attached to ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’.

“I thought we were going to have an end credits sequence from like ‘Avengers’, ok. We never got it. ‘Cap 2’ stole it from us. But that’s fine. We didn’t really have any relationship to the Avengers anyway, so it makes sense that we didn’t get it,” Gunn said.

Warning: spoilers for the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ credits scene follow (if you haven’t seen the film, it’s worth the surprise we assure you).

“We were trying to cut footage together that we already had to create an ending,” he went on to explain “And I thought about having Cosmo talk or do something like that.

"Then Fred Raskin, our editor, said, ‘It’s kind of like Benicio looks over at this box for a minute. We could probably cut something into that.’

"And that’s when we came up… and I honestly can’t remember if it was me or Fred… when we came up with putting Howard the Duck in the box.”

Howards’ inclusion caused a bit of a stir when the film was release, it was unexpected of course and yet completely in-keeping with the wonderfully bizarre film Gunn had put together.

'Family Guy's Seth Green provided Howard's voice in the scene, which revealed the famed duck to be part of The Collector's recently-destroyed collection.

'Guardians of the Galaxy' was one of the year's biggest films, becoming a pop culture phenomenon in the process. A sequel is planned for 28 April, 2017.
