For days Typhoon Phanfone had been threatening to wash out the Japanese Grand Prix, but no one could have predicted how long the cloud would hang over Formula One following the tragic events of that afternoon. Instead of marvelling at another sensational duel between 2014’s championship protagonists, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, the paddock left Suzuka on Oct 5 in sombre mood, with Jules Bianchi fighting for his life in hospital.

As the light around the track worsened, the race came to a premature end after Bianchi’s car collided with a recovery tractor and he sustained severe head injuries.
