Jeep Cherokee imported into India for R&D purposes

Earlier this year, we had reported that Fiat was planning to launch the Jeep Cherokee in India sometime in 2015. A search on the import-export tracker website, zauba.com reveals that one unit of the SUV has been imported into the country for research and development purposes.

The model imported is a front-wheel drive version of the Cherokee. It has a 2.0-litre MultiJet II turbocharged diesel engine that puts out 170 hp @ 4000 rpm and 350 Nm of torque @ 1750 rpm. The engine is also available with a lower power output of 140 hp @ 3750 rpm and 350 Nm @ 1500 rpm. The engine features a Start & Stop technology, which is claimed to enhance fuel economy.

The Cherokee is expected to be positioned in the Indian market space that includes the Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Ford Endeavour.

Apart from the Cherokee, Fiat is also planning to launch the Jeep Wrangler in 2015. Additionally, a new premium SUV for global markets is expected to go into production by the end of 2016 or early 2017.
