Shantanu Moitra is the composer-singer for Aamir Khan’s ‘PK’ movie songs. He was quizzed about what went into each and every song of teh film and where did he get the muse from while composing the music.
He described it song by song:
“Each song had a different brief so ‘Love is a waste of time’ is about the fact that there’s this quirky guy who perceives love from a quirky point of view and I think Raju (director Rajkumar Hirani) is talking about seeing it from the perspective of a person who is not in love. To a non-believer, someone in love is constantly fidgeting on his phone, staring blankly into space, talking at length on the phone. But for someone who is not in love, it must be like wasting time. So the phrase ‘love is a waste of time’ comes from there.”

“‘Chaar kadam’, which has been rendered by Shaan and Shreya Ghoshal, is a beautiful love song and Raju wanted it to have a classical feel, the way films were shot long ago. And so we looked at ‘Yeh kahaan aa gaye hum’ from ‘Silsila’ and loved the way Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha walk casually in the song with the camera held just there. There were no fast cuts.”
“‘Nanga punga’ is a fun, crazy song, sung by Shreya Ghoshal. A beautiful devotional song sung by Sonu Nigam has my classic style of composition. So ‘PK’has got a bouquet of ranges and compositions.”
