What purpose does cleaning the whole house serve when the entrance remains dirty?

As the Kozhikode Corporation sets on a massive drive to clean the city ahead of the State Youth Festival and the National Games, the condition of the pillars of the E.K. Nayanar flyover at Arayadathupalam sticks out like a sore thumb.

Not for long

The pillars of the gateway to the city have movie posters and advertisements plastered all over them. But it will not be so for long.

Local councillor O.M. Bharadwaj is all set to give the pillars a facelift, inspired by the work done on one of the pillars by the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), Kozhikode branch.

Convention

The IIA Kozhikode has decided to give a makeover to a pillar of the flyover as part of ‘Cross Roads’, its annual convention that concluded on Saturday.

The IIA volunteers removed all the posters from one of the pillars, gave it a black coat, and then allowed an artist to paint a beautiful picture in the middle of the structure.

Special effects

A few special effects will be added in the coming days to create a three dimensional painting. The work is still going on, and the makeover will be complete in a few days.

Inspired by IIA work

Mr. Bharadwaj, councillor of Thiruthiyad ward where the flyover is located, was inspired by what the architects did and has decided to replicate it on the other five pillars of the flyover.

Once the architects finish the work on the central pillar, which even serves as a traffic island, the work on the rest will start.

Search for sponsors

“The cost is yet to be estimated. We will get some sponsors for the rest of the pillars,” Mr. Bharadwaj said and added that similar facelift shall be considered for other public places in the city once the pillars are ready.
