Girl found dead in Jalpaiguri, father alleges rape, murder

The girl had gone missing on Saturday night and her body was found the next day from a nearby field.

A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered at Thakurpath area at Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri district on Sunday. The girl, who was due to appear for the secondary exam next year, had gone missing on Saturday night and her body was found the next day from a nearby field by farmers who raised an alarm. Police later retrieved the body.

The victim’s father, who is a farmer, has alleged in his complaint that one Amit Roy, a resident of Mullickpara area was in a relationship with his daughter and of late had insisted on a physical relationship with her. The complaint also said that Roy had threatened to kill the girl if she did not relent.

Kunal Agarwal, SP, said that the accused had been arrested. “Body of a 15-year-old girl was found today and since the victim’s father had put in a complaint of a rape and murder, the accused has been arrested and a case under sections 302 and 376 had been filed,” he said.

The body has been sent for a post mortem and a vaginal swab has been sent to the North Bengal Medical College for forensic tests.

Police have also recovered a piece of cloth from spot where the body was found and they suspect that the girl had been strangled to death with the cloth. Sources also said the accused had admitted of being in a relationship with the girl but had said that they had broken up long ago and he didn’t know why his name was dragged into it.

SFI, the students’ wing of CPM has called a strike at Dhupguri on Monday over the incident. On September 2, the body of another schoolgirl had been found near the railway tracks in Dhupguri. The girl had allegedly been gangraped.

NIA arrests accused in UK Indian embassy attack last year

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday said they have arrested a man, a resident of the UK, in connection with the violence at the Indian High Commission in London during a protest last year. The accused, identified as Inderpal Singh Gaba, has been arrested for carrying out unlawful activities during the protests that took place on March 22, 2023.
