Health Experts Saddle up To Launch 5,000 Calorie Challenge with Abu Dhabi Ocean Racings Adil Khalid

(MENAFNEditorial) A trio of leading health organisations is harnessing pedal power at Abu Dhabi's Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) Stopover Destination Village in a challenge to match the efforts of Emirati sailing Olympian Adil Khalid and to promote community wellness.

Mubadala's Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Healthpoint and Imperial College London Diabetes Centre have teamed up to hold a public stationary cycling challenge at the Destination Village on Abu Dhabi's Corniche Breakwater, using the huge daily, at-sea calorie burn of Khalid, the trimmer for Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing (ADOR), the emirate's entry into the VOR 2014-15, as the target for participants.

ADOR's Khalid burns an incredible 5,000 calories on a typical day sailing Azzam, ADOR's 65-foot racing yacht, during the epic, round-the-world VOR. The complimentary daily spinning class will allow up to 15 cyclists per class to pedal away whilst being linked to Polar Beat Heart Rate Monitors, provided by Healthpoint, trying to collectively hit the same target number.

Fitness and lifestyle club THE ROOM Abu Dhabi is running the free classes every day at 6pm during the Stopover which runs until January 3, with the added incentive of the stunning location close to the VOR racing yachts on the Corniche Breakwater.

Dr. Marc Harrison, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi CEO, said: "Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is proud to be an Official Port Sponsor of the Volvo Ocean Race. We're also excited to be teaming up with our sister companies, Healthpoint and Imperial College London Diabetes Centre, to provide healthy and fun workout classes for the Abu Dhabi community."

Challenge participants must be 16 years of age or older and may register for a class by emailing burn5000@theroom.ae. Wednesday night courses will be dedicated for ladies only, and Dr. Saf Naqvi, Medical Director, Imperial College London Diabetes Centre, is keen to stress the preventative benefits of the classes.

"These cycling classes encourage our community to engage in a healthy, active lifestyle. We are proud to help show how daily exercise can be a fun, family event, while also helping to manage or even prevent diabetes and other illnesses," he said.

Participants can stay updated on the Challenge by following the #Burn5000 hashtag on social media channels.

"Together, Healthpoint and our sister companies are committed to enhancing the health and well-being of the communities we serve, and the Volvo Ocean Race demonstrates the amazing things people can accomplish when they are at their healthiest," stated Dr. Marc Ruemmler, Chief Operating Officer of Healthpoint Hospital.

Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) is once again behind Abu Dhabi's hosting of the Volvo Ocean Race. The Destination Village on the Corniche Breakwater is open daily to the public until January 3, when the race fleet departs for its next endurance sailing leg to Sanya, China. The stopover features sailing action, live concerts, watersports and family entertainment and village entry is free.
