Bangalore: Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) Chairman and Former Infosys CEO Nandan Nilekani on Friday announced that he was ready to contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections provided he was given a Congress ticket. 
 
Congress party in Karnataka has been mulling for quite some time over Nilekani's candidature. According to reports, the IT wizard would contest the crucial polls from the Bangalore South seat against BJP leader Ananth Kumar. The seat is presently held by Kumar. 
 
"Politics is a good platform to serve people. I would like to contribute to it. At this moment I am not looking at any post but just entering the fray," said Nilekani at Christ College in Bangalore. 
 
Nilekani's name has been recommended for the Congress ticket as one of its three nominees from the prestigious Bangalore South Lok Sabha seat. He has already met all top Congress leaders including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. 
 
He maintains that the high command in New Delhi would decide the final list of candidates. He has expressed his willingness to take on the sitting BJP MP from Bangalore South Ananth kumar. The BJP's national general secretary and a former union minister Ananth Kumar has been representing the constituency since 1996 without a break. He has won from the seat five times. 
 
Nilekani, who went to IIT Bombay, co-founded Infosys in 1981. According to Forbes he is one of the top 100 richest persons in India with personal assets worth over Rs 8000 crore. 
 
Karnataka state unit of the Congress has unofficially recommended his name as one of its three nominees from the Bangalore South Lok Sabha seat. 
 
He became the chairman of UIDAI in 2009 with rank of a Union Cabinet minister. 
 
According to sources Sonia and Rahul are also keen on fielding him to enhance the image of the party. 
 
Bangalore South has 8 assembly seats. The Congress has won 4 seats in the 2013 Assembly elections. It is traditionally an anti-Congress seat. The last Congress MP from Bangalore South is the late chief minister of Karnataka R Gundurao, who won in 1989. Before that also it was represented by the Janata Party MPs. 
 
It is the most prosperous part of Bangalore with a huge population of educated, affluent voters. The Congress is hoping that it can win it back, if Nandan Nilekani takes on the BJP, this time.
