Ever wondered what our former great leaders and news makers would look like if they were born in our generation? Well, of course their featured won't change but the dressing style surely would. You definitely will be startled if Mahatma Gandhi, like any youth of today, would wear floral shirts and jackets instead of his trademark half-dhoti? Israel-based artist Amit Shimoni tried to imagine that about him and few more leaders, and guess what, his imagination won over the world. His painting series, called Hipstory, tries to recreate the iconic figures and places them in different times and cultures.

Story of Hipstory
"Hipstory started when I reflected on the Israeli culture and leaders in the past, and compared with today. Just for example, Google a photo of Herzel (the founder of the Israeli nation), and you will find about two appropriate photos. Now do the same for any average 18-year-old guy, you will find tons of them. I started with depicting and illustrating the Israeli generation of founding fathers. And the reaction was amazing; young and old all were inspired, and as well had their own perspective of the series," Shimoni says. After the success of the Israeli series, he thought people will identify with this notions and this kind of illustrations all over the world. He then illustrated world leaders like Gandhi, Lenin, Mao, Lincoln, Thatcher and more.

Amit, but not Indian
His name though is one of the most common one found in the Indian subcontinent, he has nothing to do with the country. "My name means a friend in Hebrew," he says adding that though right there are no plans to exhibit his work in the country, he would love to showcase if a curator is interested here. "I wish I would have an exhibition in India, but haven't got any invite from any gallery there. However, I get many appreciative reviews of my series from fans from India. I have visited India twice, and both times was blown away by Indian hospitality," he says.

More in the series
Shimoni says that he plans to illustrate many more hipstories. "I am now thinking who should I do," he says. His work right now is available online (http://nuvango.com/amitshimoni-1), and in stores around Israel, and New York. He soon plans to exhibit his work all over the world. "But I like to illustrate anything realistic, with an imaginable twist. I do affordable art, I exhibit mostly in small galleries and pubs, and I sell copy of the illustrations online, and I see no shame in doing art that is sold at relatively cheaper prices, but really can be seen at everyone houses, i.e. the hippy student, and the mid age nova-rich," he signs off.
