the first Youth Chess Olympiad is taking place in Hungary with 54 teams from all over the world competing in Gyor.

The Irish team is ranked 45th - but after seven rounds it was in 27th place (seven points), punching above its weight. Iran, Russia and India were joint leaders (12pts each). Three Irish players are doing particularly well - Cian McGovern-Leahy and Geoffrey Keating, who have four points out of six; while Daniel Dwyer has four out of five. Danny is only nine and is one of the youngest participants in the event. He has great potential, as the following game from Gyor shows.

Dwyer - Peng

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6

3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6

5.Nc3 g6 6.Be3 Bg7

7.Bc4 0-0 8.f3 Nc6

9.Qd2 Bd7 10.Nxc6 bxc6

11.Bh6 Bxh6 12.Qxh6 Qa5

13.0-0-0 Rab8 14.h4 Be6

15.Bxe6 fxe6 16.h5?!

This courageous move is objectively wrong as now Black could get an edge by playing 16...g5! or even 16...gxh5.

16...Nxh5?!

17.g4 Nf6? (D)

Black had to play 17...Rxf3! 18.gxh5 Rxb2! 19.hxg6 Rxc2+ 20.Kxc2 Qxc3+ 21.Kb1 Qb4+ with a perpetual check.

18.g5! Rf7

19.gxf6 exf6

Now Black does not have enough compensation for a piece. In his preliminary calculations he had probably missed that 18...Nh5 would be met with 19.Rxh5! gxh5 20.g6 hxg6 21.Qxg6+ Kh8 22.Qh6+ Kg8 23.Rg1+ Kf7 24.Qg6#.

20.Rdg1 Kh8

21.Qxg6 Rbf8 22.Rg4 Qc7

23.Ne2 f5 24.Rgh4 Qe7

25.Nd4 fxe4 26.Nxe6 Re8

27.Ng5 1-0
