Starting on a high note

B-town buzz

Ali Zafar is one of the few actors from Pakistan who have tasted success on this side of the border and feels Bollywood has showered him with love. He is an equally accomplished singer and his chocolate-boy looks make him a hot favourite with women.

Although his last two films, Kill Dil and Total Siyappa, did not fare well at the box-office, the actor said he is proud of all the films he has done so far.

“At times, you don’t get the results you desire. I don’t think any actor will want his film to fail. We also do and make films with the expectation that it will work, but it’s the audience who decide the fate of a film. As an actor I am proud of all the films I have done,” said the actor with a sigh.

A risky business

Speaking about his character in his last release Kill Dil, the Pakistani actor said, “It was a big test for me. I had only done soft romantic films, a few comedies, which I have thoroughly enjoyed, but Kill Dil was something completely new. I had always wanted to play a role like this, and thankfully, it happened at the right time.”

“I had some action scenes and I had to do a lot of training for that. The action genre is new to me, but I was lucky that we had a good action director. Ranveer Singh has done action films earlier, so it was a shade easier for him,” he added.

On being asked about how he managed to bag this role despite his chocolate boy image, Ali said, “I really don’t know what impressed director Shaad Ali, but I have heard that it was Aditya Chopra who suggested my name to Shaad. He was supportive of the idea and I will remain thankful to both of them for showing their faith in me.” However, the good-looking actor also hoped that his female fan following appreciates his performance in this genre.

“I hope it (female fan following) works (laughs). But that are so many other factors that make a film a hit. The simple thing is that I have to perform and that’s the only way to impress the audience,” said Ali.

The actor-musician is all praise for his co-star Ranveer Singh’s popularity these days. “He has earned it. He is one of the most dignified and focused actors today. He has proved himself, and he deserves that. Working with him was a pleasure. We really bonded well,” he said.

Ali, who is also a popular singer and has rendered his voice in the song Nakhriley in the film, said that the audience will like it even more on the big screen. “I have always loved singing and will continue doing so. It is an amazing song, full of energy and extremely well picturised,” he said.

Musical connection

Although the actor is keeping himself busy with films these days, Ali said he will never compromise on his singing career.

“Singing can never take a backseat. I am a singer first and I will never stop composing, writing and singing. You can’t always find me doing playback in all the films that I do as an actor, because that’s not always in the contract when I sign a film,” the actor explained.

Speaking about his Bollywood career, Ali said, “I am extremely satisfied as an artiste because Bollywood has showered me with love. What more can an actor and singer like me, who is not from this country, expect? I also feel confident because I have been able to do things which few have managed so far. I hope I keep getting this love from India.”
This actor-singer, who has managed to win the hearts of both Pakistan and India, said he has not planned anything for future but wants to continue acting and singing for sure. “There are quite a few projects. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I just want to continue acting and singing. I haven’t planned anything, as I am happy with whatever is happening in my career,” Ali shared.
