Another cop hit by speeding vehicle, this time in East Delhi

Nandan is the 5th policeman to be killed or injured in Delhi by rashly driven vehicles in a week.

A day after a Delhi Police sub-inspector was crushed by a truck, another policeman on duty was hit by a speeding SUV on Friday night, critically injuring him.

Head constable Raghu Nandan was hit by a speeding Renault Duster around 1 am in East Delhi’s Pandav Nagar. The 45-year-old policeman was flagging down vehicles at a police barricade around 100 metres from the Commonwealth Games Village at the time, the police said.

Nandan is the fifth policeman to be killed or injured in the capital by rashly driven vehicles in a week in separate incidents. While three policemen were killed, two more, including Nandan, were critically injured.

“Nandan was manning a police barricade on NH-24 along with two other policemen when the Duster approached the checkpoint. The vehicle was headed towards Indraprastha. Nandan signalled it to slow down. It didn’t and hit him. He was rushed to Max hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU. His condition is serious,” a police officer said.

Siddhant (22), who was driving the SUV and was arrested from the spot, has been booked for rash, negligent and drunken driving and the vehicle impounded.

Siddhant, police said, was involved in three previous cases of assault and other petty crimes.

On Thursday night, a 55-year-old sub-inspector was mowed down by a speeding truck in Outer Delhi’s Alipur while he was on his way to investigate an accident in Narela.

Police said the driver was arrested after a PCR van chased him down. “Sub-inspector Hazari Lal, who was on a two-wheeler, had stopped at a traffic signal in Palla-Bakhtawar on GT Road when the truck rammed his bike from behind.

On December 14, two police personnel, who were on duty at a police picket in Kalindi Kunj, were run over while flagging down a speeding taxi.

Another policeman was seriously injured in the incident that took place around 12.40 am in Southeast Delhi’s Jaitpur. Constable Sawarkar Pralhad Ramao, ASI Nagender Pal Singh and constable Kaptan Singh were on duty at a police picket in Okhla Barrage, Kalindi Kunj.
