Deh Gah Dog Mushers hold open class race

For the first time in 30 years, the DehGah Dog Mushers Club in Fort Providence, N.W.T., is holding an open class race. That means competitors can use as many dogs as they want.

"People in town have been asking to see the big strings of dogs,” says Susan Fleck, a musher who’s helping to organize today’s event.

“We hear some people are running running 14 dogs, 16 dogs,” Fleck says. “It should be exciting. There'll be almost 200 dogs starting to go."

Dog races at Christmastime are an annual tradition.

They go back to the days trappers would come off the line for the holidays to test their teams against each other.
