Sligo Rovers have signed former Limerick defender Stephen Folan.

The Galwegian signed for Newcatle United in 2008 as a 16-year-old and played up to reserve team level. While there he played alongside current Rovers defender Jeff Henderson.

He was released in 2012 and signed for Limerick. He played 66 times for them during his two years, scoring three goals, and was also made captain last season.

Folan is a former Ireland under-17 and under-18 international.

He takes the number of players signed to Owen Heary’s squad to 20.

Folan said: "As a defender it will be great to play for Owen Heary. He was a big attraction in me coming to the club. Working under him will improve my all round game. He is the type of manager who will get the most out of me. Sligo Rovers is definitely the right club for me to be at right now.

“I have come here because I want to win the league. I think that with the players we have retained and the players that have been added we are more than capable of right up there fighting for the league in October and hopefully getting to a Cup final as well.

Heary said: “This is a very good signing. He is a very good player and a good defender. He can play on the ball but is also capable of defending when he has to. He is the type of player we want at the club, he is young and hungry to win things. He is also from Galway so knows what the club is all about which is a plus."

“We have been looking at Stephen for a while and chasing him. Thankfully we have managed to get him here to sign for Sligo Rovers."
