Question of a scarf

Question of a scarf
The top 5 fashion queries baffling the world, revealed by Google and answered by our experts.

We are what we Google. According to the California-based Internet god and its Annual Year in Search report, the most searched workout is something called ‘Insanity’ that promises to get you in the best shape of your life in 60 days. The most talked about diet remains the caveman-inspired Paleo spread and the most pressing fashion issue has to do with scarves. Anticlimactic, perhaps but we decided to put an end to the befuddlement that has you in front of the mirror for hours in style indecision. Mirror spoke to fashion bloggers Kayaan Contractor and Simin Lakhani to answer your fashion queries.

HOW TO WEAR A SCARF

Simin: There are more than 25 ways to wear a scarf. Honestly, you don’t wear a scarf to complement your clothes. You wear the right clothes to complement a good scarf. I love wearing the modern one-loop. The bunny ear is interesting, too.

Kayaan: I would wear a linen, wool-cotton or light silk blend scarf in Mumbai because it is not crazy cold. Pair it with a T-shirt, cardigan and ripped jeans. Don’t go over the top and wear a muffler unless you find yourself in Delhi. There is no functional use to a scarf in Mumbai weather. If you wear one, you wear it for style.

WHAT TO WEAR TO A WEDDING

Simin: Deciding on how much is too much at a wedding depends on how closely related are you to the bride or groom. If you are family or like family, then feel free to go fully Bollywood. Sarees, cholis, designer names or copies, intense make-up and dressed up hair. If you aren’t, keep it simple and chic.

Kayaan: At Indian weddings, it’s all about traditional unless there is a theme at a cocktail party. Try a light lehenga or Indo-western palazzo pants with a mirror work choli, no dupatta and statement neckpiece. Unless its family, I don’t see a reason to go jewellery crazy or embroidery happy. Unless of course, you want to compete with the bride.

WHAT TO WEAR ON A FIRST DATE

Simin: For a first date, wear something you relate to, not try to be someone else. A chic black dress could keep it formal and great depending on the location of your date. Monochromes; black or white are classy colours to stick with. You can work a white shirt with a maxi skirt, a basic dress with a colourful jacket. Keep in mind the fun, flirty and playful mood.

Kayaan: I would wear me. Well, ok maybe not sneakers-andjeans-me but a nicer version of myself. Be presentable and be comfortable. If it’s a dinner, wear highwaisted trousers, a crop top and cute pumps. I’m not a dress person. For a lunch date, most people would do a cutesy sundress and cardigan. But I’d wear a leather, three-quarter pencil skirt and a plaid shirt.

HOW TO WEAR ANKLELENGTH BOOTS

Simin: It doesn’t matter that you aren’t in New York. If you want to wear boots, wear them. Pull out your favourite trench, jacket, jeggings, cape and flaunt them with boots heeled as high as six inches. If you can walk in them comfortably, Mumbai wants to see you strut.

Kayaan: Boots in Mumbai should preferably be flat with not too much going on. Then again, I wear leather riding boots at times. I think boots that reach half the length of your calf is good. Any taller and your thighs will get sweaty. Wear them with leggings or ripped, jeans and a loose shirt.

WHAT TO WEAR WITH LEGGINGS

Simin: Leggings can be worn with almost anything. You can work them with a sweater or a warm top that covers the butt, a short dress, a tunic and a scarf. Add leggings and boots and that’s your winter look.

Kayaan: Leggings go well with oversized men’s T-shirts or a boyfriend shirt and sneakers. It’s essentially everyday wear. You can dress it up with a faux leather jacket or a gilet (sleeveless jacket).

HOW TO WEAR A MAXI SKIRT

Simin: Maxi skirts are the best thing that happened to fashion. They can be styled with a crop top, a singlet and chunky jewellery or you can add a jacket to the look to give it a grunge feel. Maxi skirts are the trendiest element to pull off a sweetgirl-who-knows-how-tohave-fun look.

Kayaan: Wear a highwaist maxi with a crop top. Or pair the crop top with an open denim shirt. Maxi skirts aren’t terribly flattering on topheavy women, though.

TYING THE BUNNY EAR

1 Drape scarf over your shoulders with one end longer than the other. Loop the longer end around your neck twice

2 Take the same end around your neck and fit it through the second loop

3 Tie a simple overhand knot

4 Fit the loops over the knot so that the two ends dangle slightly to the side
