P'pang hill cutting still on despite stop-work order?
PENAMPANG: The land owner who was given a stop-work order on large-scale hill cutting at Kg Togudon here would definitely be breaking the law if he had ignored it. District Officer Luvita Koisun was asked after officiating a Corporate Social Responsibility programme by Petronas called "Sentuhan Kasih" (Loving Touch) at Kampung Moyog, in conjunction with the festive season.

However, she has not received any confirmation from the officers sent to check if the hill cutting work was still ongoing.

Meanwhile, she urged the locals not to sell their land just for profit because they would have no more land for their future generations, while problems would be created when outside developers carry out works on the land without any regards the local customs.

Earlier, in his short introductory speech, Village Chief John Gintos mentioned the hill cutting, which is opposed by the villagers due to mud pollution.

In a related dialogue held a few days before at Kg Notorus, the villagers there had complained that the hill cutting was still continuing as usual. Gintos said his village is about five square kilometres with a population of 1,200 and this is the first time Petronas implemented their programme here.

"They are always welcome in our village," he added.

Head of Petronas Sabah and Labuan, Julita Ontol, said 200 students from the local school will each receive a schoolbag afterwards as well as some complimentary gas tanks to the villagers.

The village community hall was also given a fresh coat of paint, apart from some general cleaning.

She also said Petronas has several technical universities where bright students from the local communities will be sponsored in studies relating to oil and gas technologies.

"These students will be taking over my job in future," said Julita, adding, "this programme is also to inculcate the spirit of voluntarism among our staff."

The morning event also included Christmas karaoke for kids, choir singing, magic show, Christmas-themed colouring arts for kids and a brief safety talk on using cooking gas.

Also in attendance were General Manager of Petronas Mizhan Azri Masri and President of Huminodun Foundation Datin Mary Lajawai Galun, village chiefs and Development and Security Committee chairmen from the nearby villages.
