Friday’s roundup: Billerica tops North Andover in boys’ basketball

Billerica had the ball right where it wanted it, in junior Josh Bradanese’s hands in the waning seconds of its Merrimack Valley Conference showdown with visiting North Andover, even though the Indians were down by one.

On a play tailored for Bradenese (24 points, 10 rebounds) to take the winning shot, the pass to him was deflected, but went right into the hands of Indians senior Brad Fisher, who was under the basket for the easy layup as time expired, giving Billerica the 56-55 win.

“It was a play we worked on extensively in practice,” said Billerica coach Mark Mastrullo. “We worked it through our best player [Bradenese], the ball got deflected and went right into Brad’s hand, who was in the right place at the right time.”

The teams exchanged leads all night. North Andover pulled out to a 5-point cushion with two minutes remaining, the largest lead of the contest.

The game was a far cry from when the two teams faced each other last season, when the Knights won, 63-37, in their own gym.

Billerica brought its whole team back from last season when it went 10-10 before losing in the opening round of the tournament to eventual Division 1 North runner-up Andover, 54-52. The Indians (2-0) were ready for Knights, whom Billerica hadn’t defeated since North Andover joined the MVC in 2012.

“There was a lot of motivation and we knew we had to prove ourselves,’’ said Mastrullo.
