Senior constable Adam West said there had been an altercation between two groups of people who had just left a nearby pub.

"Two men, a 21-year-old and a 25-year-old from Brunswick West were arrested and are assisting police with their enquiries," senior constable West said.

The 55-year-old man was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious but stable condition, an Ambulance Victoria spokesman said.
