A high-level delegation of the state council of ministers that met Governor Kesri Nath Tripathy on Friday to register their protest against the arrest of state minister Madan Mitra by the CBI in the Sharada scam, found little support from him.
“I told them what I am telling everybody. The CBI must have found some material against the minister and thus has arrested him. If the court finds the evidence inconsequential and finds the minister innocent, they will release him.
Everybody should have faith in the judicial process,’’ the Governor told The Indian Express after his meeting with the Trinamool delegation led by Education Minister Partha Chatterjee.
The other members of the delegation included Minister for Panchayats and Rural Development Subrata Mukherjee, Minister for Power Manish Gupta, Minister of State for Law and Health Chandrima Bhattacharya and Minister of State for Women and Child Development Shashi Panja.
“We discussed the prevailing situation in the state with the governor and told him that CBI was being used by the BJP to meet its political ends.
We also told him how the CBI arrested Mitra without informing the Assembly Speaker and the state government. The Governor told us that he was also not informed about the arrest,’’ Chatterjee said after the meeting.
He added that the delegation had sought the governor’s intervention in clearing the chit fund Bill that was passed by the state Assembly about six months ago and was now lying with the Centre.
“We told him that the Trinamool government that had taken action against chit funds and arrested people like Sudipta Sen. Chit funds had flourished under the Left rule but the Marxists had never done anything to tame them,” Chatterjee said.
He added: “We passed a Bill to curb chit funds and punish erring owners of such funds. We requested the governor that he should do something to ensure that the Bill was cleared by the Centre and becomes a law. The governor said he will do his best in this regard.”
