Auto drivers demand more CNG filling stations

December 19, 2014 11:57 pm | Updated 11:57 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of auto-rickshaw unions on Friday staged a demonstration in front of the Sub-Collector’s office here demanding that the government set up more CNG filling stations.

Hundreds of auto-rickshaw drivers squatted in front of the office and raised slogans against the government’s alleged apathetic attitude. “As much as 58,000 standard cubic metre gas is required for CNG autos in the city a day, but the government is supplying only 52,500 standard cubic metres. Owing to this, drivers are facing untold problems,” said JAC convenor D. Shankar.

He added that drivers were forced to wait for hours in queues at filling stations. “The government should come to the rescue of drivers by ensuring adequate supply of CNG. If the government fails to solve drivers’ problems, the JAC will give a bandh call and bring auto services to a halt,” Mr. Shankar warned.

He also accused Traffic and Transport Department officials of harassing drivers by unnecessarily registering cases and imposing huge fines.
