Leisure centre revamp project moves forward

A £3m project to refurbish a leisure centre in Hertfordshire has moved forward after being approved by the council.

North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC) has agreed to the major renovations to the North Herts Leisure Centre (NHLC), a project which will be funded by the council and Stevenage Leisure Ltd (SLL).

The proposed programme of refurbishments, as well as construction of an extension to the NHLC, will extend the expected lifespan of the centre, councillors said.

Plans include a new learner/teaching pool, cafeteria, dance studio, offices, sports hall floor, refurbishment of the wet changing areas and additional parking.

The project is due to start late summer 2015 with an aim to be completed and open to the public by spring/summer 2016.

Jane Gray, the council's portfolio holder for leisure, said: "This exciting new development will directly improve the customer and member experience for the local community who are increasingly using the centre each year, and provide more opportunities for future growth."

Jonathan Stone, corporate services director at SLL, added: "We are delighted to be working with NHDC on this exciting new project, which will bring the community together and make them fitter, healthier and happier."
