10 Highly-Anticipated Movie Sequels of 2015

BANGALORE: Many movie enthusiasts are patiently counting down as each day goes by. These fanatics are eagerly anticipating the release of movies for the upcoming year. As they view various movie trailers uploaded on YouTube, many are surely wondering what these movies will be like and to an extent, their outcomes.

It’s a little overwhelming but there’s so much to look forward to next year already! 2015 is going to be a full year for movies, and there are sequels aplenty coming.

Let’s have a look at some of the Hollywood movies sequels expected this year:

1. Star Wars: Episode VII

This upcoming Star Wars film will be set 30 years after the Return of the Jedi. The upcoming film, which is directed and written by J.J. Abrams, is scheduled for release in December 18, 2015.  Star Wars: Episode VII is slated to be the first film in an upcoming trilogy.

In the upcoming installment, Leia and Han Solo form an alliance with the New Republic against the remnants of the Galactic Empire, while Luke Skywalker assumes the hefty task of restoring the Jedi Order.

2. The Avengers 2

Marvel Studios announced in August that the next film in the franchise will come on May 1, 2015. During the interim, fans will get more films based on their favorite characters: Iron Man (May 2013), Thor (Fall 2013), and Captain America (Spring 2014).

It’ll be up to writer/director Joss Whedon to weave together all those storylines—but if the first Avengers film was any indication, he’s up to the task. But some fans believe the final release date could get pushed off as a result of the additional work involved. Stay tuned.

3. Avatar 2

Originally, Fox executives hoped to have this sequel open in 2014, but the release date has been pushed back to 2015. Maybe it’s taking so long because director James Cameron is reportedly filming both the second and third films at once. As of this summer, Cameron was still working on the script and hadn’t begun shooting. What’s clear, though, is that Cameron has some new tricks up his sleeve.

“We can have Chinese Na’vi; [and in the live-action sequences] we can also have Chinese actors who speak English in the film,” Cameron said in September. “We are projecting a future in Avatar, and if you project that future out, it is logical that there would be a number of Chinese amongst the contingent on Pandora.”

4. Jurassic World

The upcoming film Jurassic World, which will be the fourth movie in the successful Jurassic Park franchise, will have a futuristic look in comparison to the previous films. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, the upcoming film is set 22 years after the events of the first film in the series, Jurassic Park. Scheduled for release on June 12, 2015, Jurassic World will see Guardians of the Galaxy’s Chris Pratt going toe-to-toe with the man-eating dinosaurs.

Like Gravity, it has the potential be an eye-catching IMAX, 3D blockbuster, and if that's not enough reason to look forward to Jurassic World, Jake Johnson.

5. Pitch Perfect 2

May 15 is the next big movie follows up in the form of Pitch Perfect 2. The wildly successful musical comedy is going to be back with a bigger budget and more a cappella singing and dancing. The sequel will follow Beca Mitchell (Anna Kendrick) and Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) through their senior year of college.

All the signature favorites of the first film will be returning. The cast will also be getting bigger including actresses Chrissie Fit and new Barden Bella, Hailee Steinfeld. Also, good news for Pentatonix fans, the real life a cappella group will appear in the film as a rival group.

6. Fast and Furious 7

As we are all aware, Paul Walker tragically died before he could complete the filming for this seventh Fast and Furious film (the first since 2013), but his brothers acted as stand-ins for the rest of his role.

Horror filmmaker James Wan (Saw movies, The Conjuring) directs Vin Diesel, The Rock Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Lucas Black and Jason Statham, in what will be yet another powerhouse of a movie. In April, audiences will have the chance to see Walker on-screen for one last time.

7. Hotel Transylvania 2

Sony Pictures Animation confirms that a sequel to Hotel Transylvania has been ordered and is scheduled for release on September 25, 2015. Since the news came down just two weeks ago, little else is known, even whether director Genndy Tartakovsky is attached to the project. It’s another good example about how money talks in Hollywood. According to one writer at MTV, “It wasn’t received especially well by critics, but it broke the September box office slump and that’s all that counts.”

8. MAD MAX

It’s been almost 30 years since there’s been a Mad Max movie, but this is all going to change very soon. Come this May, he’ll be back, and madder than ever. The fourth film has been in development for 25 years. Mel Gibson reportedly lost interest to star in the movie, so Tom Hardy replaced him.

George Miller, who directed all of the original movies, directs Hardy and Charlize Theron, in what will probably be an action-packed thrill ride of a post-apocalyptic western.

9. Spectre

For the 24th Bond film, Skyfall’s director and writer will return, along with Daniel Craig as Bond. Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz plays bad guy Oberhauser, Ralph Fiennes plays M and 50-year-old Monica Bellucci plays Bond’s love interest—the oldest and possibly sexiest Bond woman ever. SPECTRE is an acronym for Special Executive for Counter-Intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion, so the plot will probably revolve around that. Also announced is the new Bond car: The Aston Martin DB10.

10. Terminator Genisys

Arnold’s back. Schwarzenegger had to sit out the last Terminator film, 2009’s Salvation, because he was still the governor of California. For the fifth one, Alan Taylor directs Arnold, Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke and Zero Dark Thirty’s Jason Clarke (John Connor).

The movie takes place in 2029, and John Connor sends Kyle Reese to the past to save Sarah. Judging by the newly released trailer, the film will feature innovative special effects and Arnold uttering his signature line again: “I’ll be back.” Terminator will be back on the big screen in July.
