Scary stuff.

Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty took a brutal hit Thursday night from Anaheim Ducks’ defenseman Clayton Stoner, causing him to faceplant into the glass along the boards.

The hit didn’t earn Stoner a penalty and play continued on, but as Pacioretty struggled to get to his feet and continue skating, the Canadiens medical staff eventually came out to take a look at him. Trainers escorted Pacioretty off the ice at the 4:04 mark of the third period, and he was transported to the hospital to undergo precautionary testing. The Canadiens went on to lose to the Ducks 2-1.

Per the Montreal Gazette, Habs head coach Michel Therrien said, “I didn’t like the hit” during a postgame presser, but refused to discuss the matter further.

Pacioretty’s close friend and teammate David Desharnais was a bit more vocal, saying the hit “should have been a penalty.”

It remains to be seen if Stoner will face any action by the NHL for the hit.

Update: The Canadiens say Pacioretty is day-to-day, and the NHL took no action against Stoner.
