Jackie Chan feels guilty and full of remorse for failing to rescue a cinematographer who died on the set of his new film, Skiptrace.

The superstar shared his feelings on his Weibo account on Wednesday  (Dec 17), the day Chan Kwok-hung, 51, drowned in an accident in Hong Kong.

A vessel carrying the film crew capsized off Lantau Island and seven other crew members managed to swim back to shore except for Chan.

Jackie Chan, the film's protagonist, was reportedly on shore when the incident occurred.

He jumped into the sea in an attempt to rescue the cinematographer but his efforts proved to be futile.

Chan's body was later found and transported to North Lantau Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“Yesterday we were still together. Pain! How could I be so incompetent, I didn’t save you! My brother, go in peace.”  - Jackie Chan, on his Weibo account

Tenky Tin Kai-man, chairman of the Movie Production Executives Association, said: "We had a discussion of whether we should revamp our safety guidelines earlier this year, but this accident happened before our revamp."

Chan was a 20-year veteran in the film industry and was the main breadwinner of the family.

Tin said that his association is now raising funds for Chan's family.
