Nature of her art

One of the biggest patrons of art in the city, an avid collector, and gallerist - she runs the Tao Art Gallery in Worli - Kalpana Shah is a selftaught artist, too. She will be exhibiting her work after five years. The various elements of nature, and their significance and relation to our existence inspire her latest show, Landscape of Life, which opens on Monday.

Incidentally, Shah’s first collector was late maverick artist MF Husain, who sang praises of her art in a letter he had written to her some years ago: “Your work is an outburst of great significance. Monumental in its structure, mysterious in its content and provocative in its presence. If there is anything like the dynamic power of creativity that could burst like a volcano, your canvas has proved it.” Wow.

Counting sheep

Award winning wildlife photographer Kalyan Varma is done chasing the monsoons. He is now chasing sheep of the Dhanghar community in Maharashtra which is travelling 400 kilometres, an annual migration towards their summer home, close to the Konkan coast. Apparently, the wildlife photographer is yet to get over the awesome sight of 50,000 sheep and their shepherds moving as a unit. And the fact that a record number of wolves are following the sheep (and Kalyan) makes the journey thrilling. Another piece of trivia: The shepherds never carry a single rupee on them and barter sheep for essentials and that includes cell phones.

Bollywood ‘Maya’jaal

Here’s another Bollywood-smitten international artiste. The diarist has learnt that popular Romanian DJ and composer Edward Maya is all set to make his musical debut in a Hindi film releasing next year. Last year, there were talks of Maya remixing a number for Himesh Reshammiya's composition Umarao Jaan. But it did not take off. The Stereo Love sensation, who will be touring India this weekend, is now composing a track for a movie directed by national awardwinning director Onir.

Apparently, the director has also offered Maya a cameo in the film. That’s not all, Maya will also collaborate with singers Neha Kakkar and Sona Mohapatra for his own crossover independent releases and an album.

Tailpiece

Every movie of any of the three Khans unfailingly sparks a debate about which of them is the biggest marketing genius, but this bunch of Stanford students have no such doubts. The students, who came to India in search of public figures who have done well in their careers and are role models to many, ended their search with SRK. And the actor obliged, spending some quality time with them. He even admitted that he learned more from the students than they did from him. So we know who will win the next round of marketing wars.
