The Warne guide to body language!
BRISBANE: There's a little debate brewing here about body language, involving the sheikh of tweak Shane Warne and one of Australia's heat-harried pacers Mitchell Starc.
Starc doesn't speak that particular language well Warne has said, raising the hackles of the Aussie team management.
More than 'good' or 'bad body language, Warne's use of the word 'soft' seems to have rubbed everyone the wrong way.
The Aussies like being tough and in-your face: that's excellent body language. 'Soft', in comparison, is downright insulting, even coming from a commentator.
First off, Australia coach Darren Lehmann had this to say, "Soft? He used those words? That's very harsh. I will take it up with Shane myself."
This is what Warne originally said, "He (Starc) needs to change his body language...he looks a bit soft He needs to puff his chest out a bit...look harder."
Starc's girlfriend Alyssa Healy quickly got took into as a personal affront, tweeting: "Any danger of something positive?" The controversy ballooned into hard news here in Oz land, and Warne first issued a sort of deft, leftfield apology. He first tweeted "what rubbish reporting and sensationalism...poor journalism, facts please" before clarifying: "What I did say was his body language and his presence gave the appearance of being nonchalant and he needed to improve his body language, it was all a bit nice and soft and easy, not him."
Much like his vicious turners, this naturally bamboozled more people, but there was another twist in the tale. Warne thought he had gone a bit, well, soft, and proceeded to stand by his comment.
"I think all of us in commentary want to be as constructive as we possibly can. I spoke to Lehmann last night. We spoke and he said, 'What you said is exactly what we've been saying'. He (Starc) needs a better presence and let batsmen know he's around. That's all I mean by it and stand by it," Warne was quoted as saying in the Australian media. Poor Mitchell Starc. On top of all the heat, it must have been terribly hard for him to take.
