Former Ireland international Gary Doherty has retired from professional football.

The 34-year-old central defender has called time after being unable to line out for Wycombe this season on account of a knee injury he suffered in a pre-season friendly.

Doherty made 501 club appearances across all four English divisions and played 33 times for Ireland and scoired four goals. His last last international outing came as a 25-year-old under Brian Kerr, who used him as an emergency striker.

The popular Doherty enjoyed a successful underage career during Kerr's time in that sphere, with the highlight coming in Cyprus in 1998 as a member of the U-18 squad that was crowned European champions.

Richard Dunne is now the only one of member of that panel still playing league football in England.

Doherty joined Spurs from first club Luton for £1m in 2000 and left White Hart Lane after four years to link up with Norwich where he stayed until 2010. He then lined out for Charlton en route to Wycombe.
