Meet the band - Frisky Pints
Comprising Joseph Dinji on vocals and guitar, Anggu on guitar and vocals, Danny Dakta on bass and vocals and Valentino on drums, the Frisky Pints are a mad bunch from Mizoram. They currently consider New Delhi their home. The band started when Joseph and Danny met in Camden Town, London in 2010. Armed with a dream of making a band and sharing their love of music with the rest of the world, they returned to India to meet with friends, and now fellow band mates, Anggu and Valentino.
The name ‘Frisky Pints’ comes from their love of having fun together and their love for their drinks. Since 2010, they’ve played at various music festivals and venues across India, performed with international and indie bands like Junoon, Menwhopause, Bombay Bassment, Sky Rabbit and appeared at charity shows in the North East. Another landmark for the members was winning the best vocalist and best drummer awards at a battle of the bands at IITM, Gwalior.
On their a-ha moment: Says frontman Joseph, “Recently, we participated in a global battle of the bands competition by a famous chain. It took place at all its outlets from Las Vegas to Tokyo. We were happy to have stormed through the national level competition as well as the online voting system to reach the ‘top 25 bands’ worldwide category, one of first Indian bands to reach this level.” Another breakthrough was being handpicked last year by Indus Creed frontman Uday Benegal to jam with him for a television series. Says Joseph, “I remember the advice he gave us, that as a band, things aren’t always perfect. Ups and down are part of life, yet if you stay true to the music and work hard, success comes.”
On their brand of sound: The indie band has a pop background, incorporated by rock music, catchy guitar tunes and a 4/4 drum beat. Their songs are based on melody and have simple lyrics. “We usually sing about love. Some of our songs are about us having fun and drinking together. We don’t get too technical about the music,” says Joseph, who is excited about the group acquiring their own recording studio and jam pad where they can do all our production. With their star on the rise, the Frisky Pints are all set to release their debut album soon. They’ve called it #FeelingFrisky to ‘keep up with the times’. “We write about things that happen to us. One song is about a girl cheating on a guy, for instance,” says Joseph but doesn’t reveal who the guy in question is.
On their influences: All the band members listened to pop music as kids — from Michael Jackson to Prince. “As we grew older, Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys, The Killers became our idols and we got hooked to blues music by BB King and Eric Clapton,” says Joseph.
On their way forward: The boys from Mizoram are currently working on a music video and will start recording a new album next year. Says Joseph, “We believe the first album isn’t enough for a band to get recognition — we will have more recordings, more songs and materials for a good body of work.”
