Drones may soon keep an eye on Delhi’s green cover

The green cover in Delhi makes up for a fifth of its area of about 1,480 sqkm.

Faced with a manpower shortage, the Delhi government proposes to have drones flying over its forests to monitor encroachments and map various aspects of development.

“We do not have sufficient number of people to check all encroachments. So we thought of using drones,” said Sanjiv Kumar, secretary,
environment and forests department.

Department officials said they are grappling with the lack of field functionaries to check encroachments on forest land and sites proposed for tree-felling.

According to the Forest Survery of India’s report of 2013, the green cover in Delhi makes up for a fifth of its area of about 1,480 sqkm.
