PANAJI: Goa Shipyard Limited on Thursday laid the keel for two ‘Water Jet Fast Attack Crafts’ for Mauritius police force, taking the ties between the two countries to a greater level.
The keel laying ceremony was held in the presence of chairman and managing director of Goa Shipyard’ CMD Rear Admiral Shekhar Mital with Captain Anish Nair, warship production superintendent, Goa, doing the honours.
The 50-metre, state-of-the-art attack craft, is powered by three main engines and a water jet, which helps it hit a top speed of 35 knots.
It can be used in defence and protection work, survey, pollution control, coastal patrol, anti-smuggling,
anti-poaching activities, search and rescue, fisheries protection and monitoring of foreign chartered trawlers, Goa Shipyard
sources said.
“We are the largest exporter of ships from the country and are currently executing export orders of over 1200 core.
The deal for attack crafts was signed on May 7 in Port Louis, Mauritius,” Mital informed.
Goa Shipyard designed the Fast Attack Craft, but tweaked it to meet the specific requirements of the Mauritius police force.
Vasco-based defence public sector unit had earlier signed a contract with the Government of Mauritius for construction and delivery of 11 fast interceptor boats.
The keel for the interceptor boats was laid on June 2 at the PSU’s Sancoale base.
