MLA threatens CMHO, sharp reaction across doctors' groups
JAIPUR: The incident where BJP MLA Prahlad Gunjal reportedly threatened chief medical health officer (CMHO) of Kota with dire consequences has evoked sharp reactions from the medical fraternity. They are now demanding the MLA's resignation. Various associations of doctors have threatened huge protests, if action is not taken against Gunjal.
The in-service doctors in the state are planning to boycott work for two hours on Friday and take mass leave on Monday as a mark of protest.
The doctors' community criticized the MLA for misusing his post and allegedly asking CMHO (Kota) Dr RN Yadav to help an employee.
"There is a lot of anger among the resident doctors and medical students. The kind of abusive language he used is shameful. If an MLA asks a government employee to do wrong things, it poses a big question on the constitutional post he holds," said Dr Rajvendra Chaudhary, president of Jaipur Association of Resident Doctors.
Chaudhary said that all the resident doctors and medical students will take out a rally in the city on Friday evening. Besides, a large number of doctors under All Rajasthan In Service Doctors Association (ARISDA) collected at the Statue Circle on Thursday evening to mark their protest. ARISDA secretary Nasreen Bharti said, "We will boycott work for two hours on Friday and also go on mass leave on Monday if action is not taken in the matter."
Bharti said that they have support of Rajasthan Medical College Teachers Association, Jaipur Medical Association, JARD and Private Doctors Association.
The doctors' associations are also submitting memorandum to collectors in different districts criticizing the incident. ARISDA organizing secretary Dr Ajay Chaudhary said, "The doctors are hurt by the incident. We are submitting a memorandum to the chief minister and health minister through collectors. The MLA should publicly apologize for his act for the kind of language he used and threatened the CMHO of dire consequences. The doctors' sentiments have been hurt and we cannot work in such kind of pressure."
The protest was also organized by doctors in Kota and other parts of the state. Dr Rakesh Jain, the president of Jaipur Medical Association said, "Such words should be not spoken to doctors or any other person. We criticize it."
Rajasthan Congress Committee (health unit) president Dr Ish Munjal said that Prahlad Gunjal's attitude is similar to that of Taliban. He said the MLA has crossed all limits and entire doctors' fraternity is deeply pained with the way he used abusive language against CMHO, Kota. He added that the incident showed how the government employees are working under immense pressure. The MLA has terrorized the CMHO and even his children, said Munjal.
