Intercultural norms held up in comedy

Let your funny bone be tickled this weekend when “The Roosta” brings his new show, Diluted People, to East London.

The Roosta, whose real name is Ndumiso Lindi, will be launching his new one-man show at The Venue@Hemingways on Saturday.

The Zwelitsha-born comedian said Diluted People was a continuation of his previous show, Colour Mine.

“I wasn’t sure what to call it at first. I thought about Colour Mine 2 or do it the Yizo Yizo style, Colour Mine the Return.

“When I saw the material and analysed it, I realised that I am telling the South African story, which is also a world story, if I can put it like that. We are diluted people, meaning we are mixed now,” he said.

Lindi said since 1994 a lot has changed in the country and cultures were now mixed.

“It is no longer taboo to see interracial relationships. Black kids now go to white schools and learn about other cultures – and in the process forget the ir own.”

Compared to his previous one-man show, Lindi said Diluted People had a personal story line in which he talks about his family and things that are close to his heart.

“Colour Mine was a broad observation but now this show is from my personal experience and family’s. My family represents the people of the country.

“I’ve seen history through my family from my parents to siblings. Our parents know more about the struggle, my siblings know about the stage of 1976, my middle brother is the guy that first moved from a township school to a white school,” he said.

Lindi believes it is important for comedians to be observant as this is the source of their material.

“South African comedy has moved from telling just a joke to comedians telling their stories so that others can relate to them.

“One needs to pay attention to every detail.”

The Wang Verstana television presenter said apart from the big cities he would be visiting, he wanted to go to the smaller towns as well.

He said he would be shooting a DVD of Diluted People in Johannesburg.

Lindi said he was hoping to feature in more television shows in the new year.

“There are a couple of things lined up,” he said.

lCatch him on Saturday at 8pm at The Venue@Hemingways.
