Former Mizoram Finance Minister’s wife found murdered in bed

A deep cut inflicted by a sharp object was found on the left side of her throat. Police couldn't trace the murder weapon.

Former Mizoram Finance Minister J Lalsangzuala’s wife Zokhumi, 83, was found murdered in her bed at her Aizawl residence on Thursday morning.

The body of Zokhumi, who has not been keeping well with age-related afflictions, was found sleeping under blankets by her grand-daughter with whom she lives in the state capital’s Mission Veng neighbourhood around 9.30 am.

A deep cut inflicted by a sharp object was found on the left side of her throat. Blood was found on the bed and on the floor nearby.

Aizawl SP C Laldina said no murder weapon has been found and there is no trace of forced entry.

Police estimate about Rs 64,000 has gone missing from the deceased’s steel cupboard, the contents of which appeared ruffled in a hasty search but it seemed it was opened with the key.

No suspects have been named although police said they are tracking and will be questioning several people who work in the residence, but who had all gone home for the Christmas vacations.

A special investigation team is also being set up and will be headed by Aizawl South SDPO F Lalbiakzauva.

Zokhumi was one of the founders of Mizoram’s largest Christian youth organization — the Presbyterian Church’s Kristian Thalai Pawl — and she was organizing secretary of the body’s first committee back in 1953.

Her husband was a respected politician known for his clean image. He passed away some years ago.
