Filmmaker Karan Johar has proved yet again why he is the jack of all trades, besides being master of more than one craft. The filmmaker-actor-fashion designer has added another gem to his already star-studded crown by donning the mantle of jewellery designer. The director, who is credited with spotting quite a few diamonds in the rough (read actors) and polishing and elevating them to superstar status,
has launched a line of jewellery for Mumbai-based Gehna Jewellers. (See Pics: Ileana, Nimrat cheer for Karan Johar, the jewellery designer)

At the formal launch on Tuesday, Karan Johar unveiled the limited edition collection with Bollywood beauties Ileana D’cruz and Nimrat Kaur playing his muses for the evening. While D’cruz wore an understated pair of tassel earring from the ‘KJO for Gehna’ collection, Kaur was seen sporting ear cuffs and a cocktail ring.

And while Johar may have proved his mettle in menswear design with partnered label Karan Johar + Varun Bahl and also successfully seduced the high street market with a clothing collection for Vero Moda, working with precious metals and gems proved to be a whole new ball game. “Fine jewellery requires lots of detailing and innovation. It was a challenge, considering this is one area that I have never dabbled in before. Researching on stones, hues and jewellery silhouettes has given me a lot of insight,” he says.

The collection comprising cocktail rings, brooches, earrings and bracelets, emphasize on “minimal luxury with dramatic opulence”. The focus is clearly on statement accent pieces, rather than elaborate sets and over-the-top design.

“Fine jewellery is a mark of beauty and luxury. My idea was to design a collection that is rooted in tradition, yet gleams on the wearer. I wanted to keep it simple and elegant. Jewellery is often kept aside for occasion wear, but I wanted to introduce a line that men and women can incorporate in their daily formal or semi casual wear as well,” says Karan Johar.

Festive offer

And while the dramatic dagger brooch or even the emerald and diamond palm bracelet might not be pieces you would wear casually, they do make a statement of subtle grandeur. And if you are under the impression that Johar is just lending his name to the line, he’s quick to dismiss any doubts. “From the conceptualisation till the final end, I have been involved with this collection. Thankfully, I was given enough room to experiment and design the collection,” he says.
