Karunanidhi against scrapping SHGs

December 18, 2014 09:03 am | Updated 09:03 am IST - CHENNAI:

DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday urged the Union government to give up the proposal to scrap the Women Self-Help-Groups (SHGs). He said the move would severely affect the socio-economic development of women in Tamil Nadu.

Recalling Union Minister for Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi’s announcement in this regard, he said the Tamil Nadu government should immediately ask the Centre not to go ahead with the plan.

Mr. Karunanidhi said women SHGs were launched during the DMK regime in 1989 with a view to ameliorating the socio-economic conditions of women and exhibitions were organised to showcase and sell the products of the SHGs. A permanent complex was inaugurated in the name of Mother Teresa in Chennai.
