Playing it by the year

Raell Padamsee’s newest production to take to the stage does have a designer touch to it.

Unfaithfully Yours, starring Mona Singh and Ronit Roy, has the characters age several years over the course of the play. Singh who plays Preet, a sardarni living in the city with her three kids and husband will have five looks designed by Maheka Mirpuri, as she grows from 30 to 54 years as the story plays out. Singh, who has always dressed in moderation for her television appearances, will wear structured kurtas with palazzos and churidars and shirts, trousers and jackets with scarves and minimal jewellery.

For Maheka, who has been under the weather with a seasonal viral and some hectic partying, this project seems to have brought in some cheer and plenty of confidence. We hear she may just get into designing looks for period films and similar projects soon.

Words worth gold

News is that the Buckingham Palace announced this morning that poet Imtiaz Dharker will be awarded Her Majesty’s Gold Medal for Poetry for the year. The Queen will present the Lahore born British poet, artist and filmmaker the award in the spring of 2015.

The Poetry Medal Committee was unanimous in recommending the poet behind Postcards from God (including Purdah) (1997), I Speak for the Devil (2001), The terrorist at my table (2006) and Over the Moon (2014), as this year’s recipient. In the words of Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, “Imtiaz Dharker draws together three countries: Pakistan, land of her birth, Britain and India, writing of the personal and the public with equal skill.” A delighted Dharker commented, “In the last few weeks before he died, at almost a hundred years old, my father didn't always remember his children’s names, but did speak of the Queen with great admiration. That this is an award from her feels very personal to me.”

Party Estate

Real estate honcho Avinash Bhosale turned a year older with a mega bash this weekend at his palatial 30,000 square feet heipad-equipped bungalow at Baner in Pune.

The original plan, we hear, was to celebrate at his bungalow in Mahabaleshwar, but the unseasonal rains got him to change the venue at the last moment.

Nonetheless, industry bigwigs and a clutch of socialites from Pune and Bombay joined the party that had been mounted on a pretty lavish scale. Pritam and his band kept up the tempo with guests joining in every now and then, while chefs from Royal China had them well fed. While some guests had to drive back to the city the same night, many others stayed on till the next day, enjoying the Bhosale brand of hospitality and the nip in the air. What more, we are told a bigger bash is being planned for his wife’s birthday in January.

Tailpiece

Those who attended the 39th founder’s day function at India Today are still reeling from it. The diarist learns that aside from usual khana and generous peena and the in-house fashion parade, the big talking point was the animation film made especially for the function. It starred, naturally, Aroon Purie, daughter Kalli Purie in a Lara Croft avatar and CEO Ashish Bagga as sort of Ninja warriors taking off in a helicopter to storm the media world bazookas and all. The film also features a Rajdeep Sardesai-shaped missile launching a deadly attack on a fellow anchor at another channel. Given how generous Rajdeep has been in his book, Election 2014, towards this said fellow anchor, we wonder how he feels about this cinematic aggression.

PS He may have lorded over Mumbai when he was police commissioner, but Satyapal Singh on Wednesday realised the downside of being a parliamentarian. The Baghpat MP, however, had the sense of humour to see him through the egalitarian nature of the LS. When his name was called out for Zero Hour - which is decided by draw of lots - Singh drew more than a few chuckles as he started off with this peach: “My pranam to Lottery Dev without whose blessings my name would not have been picked.” A politician with a sense of humour, we like.
