Muzaffarnagar MP Sanjeev Baliyan and Fatehpur MP Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti — who had  made controversial speeches in the past — appear to be taking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s warning on party MPs not crossing the “Laxman rekha” seriously.

Union Minister Jyoti, who had told voters in Delhi that they must choose between Ramzadon (those born of Ram) and haramzadon (illegitimately born), on Wednesday showed restraint and stuck to the party line.

She said Modi’s BJP government is being accepted by people of all religions. “No Prime Minister in our country has had such a welcome as Narendra Modi did when he went to the Kashmir Valley… People of all religions are accepting him,” she claimed.

Referring to the school massacre in Pakistan, she said, “Yesterday, innocent children were made prey. Those were Muslim children… but today the world needs to get together to fight terrorism.”

She evoked some of the founding fathers of the BJP ideology — SP Mookherjee and Deendayal Upadhayaya — and spoke of their dream for the nation. “The BJP’s founding fathers had a dream for the lowest classes. If they were uplifted, only then would society as a whole be uplifted. This is what the BJP is trying to do,” she said.

Festive offer

Sanjeev Baliyan, who was accused of inciting communal violence during in the riots in Muzaffarnagar in 2013, urged the “voiceless” rural electorate of Delhi to be more assertive in shaping the “political discourse” in the capital. “Delhi’s  rural population is significant. But your voices are not being heard, neither in government policies nor in state politics. But in these polls, make your vote count,” he said.

He was addressing a rally in an Arya Samaj Mandir auditorium in Narela Assembly constituency. He said that while the BJP has won recent elections in other states, “victory” in Delhi “matters the most” as it reflects the “national mood”.
