BJP plans charm offensive to take minorities on board

Party leaders believe that this will also create an environment of trust among other religions.

In an attempt to neutralise the damage caused by BJP members Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Union minister Giriraj Singh and Unnao MP Sakshi Maharaj, who made controversial speeches during poll rallies in the capital, the Delhi unit has decided to reach out to leaders of all religious faiths.

Sources said reaching out to other denominations of faith could help the party in the upcoming Assembly polls while a hard line image could hurt its prospects.

Sources said all district units have been directed to engage with granthis, imams and other religious leaders in their respective areas. The list has to be prepared by each district president and submitted to the Delhi unit.

The party has also decided that MPs, who are in the city for the Winter session of parliament, will be asked to meet religious heads and extend an environment of sauhard (camaraderie). MPs will meet religious leaders based on the states they belong to.

Sources said the Delhi unit is working on the lines of what it did in Haryana during the polls, where it had sought support from a spiritual organisation — Dera Sacha Sauda. After witnessing the success of the experiment of seeking support from religious leaders, the party is planning to repeat it in Delhi.
