Cops nab notorious chain-snatcher, seize 6 kg gold
HYDERABAD: Unlike most chain-snatchers, who work in twos or threes, Sayeed Hussain operates alone. He also uses international SIM cards to avoid police detection and takes the help of middlemen to quickly dispose of the stolen booty.
The 27-year-old, from whom city police recovered 6.3 kilos of gold worth Rs 1.7 crore, two Karizma bikes, seven cellphones and a dagger on Wednesday, began his career as a car driver when he was 20.
He then went to Dubai with hopes of making quick money. But after working in a cellphone store for some time where he realized that he could not earn the kind of money he dreamed of, he was back in India in 2008. Subsequently, he got married. Soon he came in contact with some petty thieves of his locality in Nawabsab Kunta of Kalapather and learned the tricks of the trade. By 2009, Sayeed took to snatching chains and, in no time, became an expert.
“Chain-snatchers usually work in teams. But Sayeed can snatch the gold chain of the victim single-handedly while riding a bike. His associates Mirza Azmath Ali Baig and Mohammed Akheeluddin are his childhood friends, who sometimes used to accompany Sayeed in the commission of an offence,” Task Force additional deputy commissioner of police (DCP) N Koti Reddy said.
Riding bikes like Pulsar 180 CC or Karizma, Sayeed committed 109 snatching offences in 2009-10. He was first nabbed by the SR Nagar police in 2010. Sayeed spent a few months in prison and, after coming out on bail, he continued the crime and snatched as many as 54 chains and was arrested again by the SR Nagar cops in 2011. But even after doing some time in prison all over again, Sayeed continued to unleash terror upon the womenfolk by committing 40 snatching offences in a span of five months in 2012, before he was arrested by the Mahankali police in June that year.
By then, the chain-snatcher had become more aggressive and began carrying a dagger to counter cops if they attempted to nab him.
Sayeed came out on bail in November 2012 and vanished from the cops’ radar thereafter. As he was not appearing for trial in previous cases, courts had issued non-bailable warrants (NBWs). Currently, as many as 106 NBWs are pending against him. During this period, he married for the second time and started frequently changing his residence.

According to police, Sayeed continued his criminal activity after 2012 bail and snatched 228 chains in Hyderabad and Cyberabad police commissionerate limits. Though police managed to nab some of his associates, Sayeed proved to be a slippery customer.
“He had obtained several SIM cards, including international ones, with fake ID proofs. He used second-hand vehicles purchased using fake ID proof in his criminal adventures. Moreover after committing a series of offences, Sayeed used to leave the city and holiday in places like Delhi, Goa, Bengaluru, Ooty, Mysore, Chennai, Gulbarga, Basawakalyanam, Agra and Ajmer,” Hyderabad police commissioner M Mahender Reddy said.
On November 14, Sayeed committed a snatching offence in LB Nagar. While he was escaping via RK Puram in Kothapet, two constables of the Chaitanyapuri police station chased him and tried to apprehend him. Sayeed stabbed one of the constables with a dagger, abandoned his bike and fled on the constable’s two-wheeler. Later, Sayeed and Azmath burned the bike in a remote place in Shamshabad. As Sayeed used a fake ID proof to obtain the bike he abandoned at the crime scene, the Cyberabad cops could not immediately trace him.
However, with an input received from one of the stolen property receivers, an East Zone Task Force team arrested Sayeed on Tuesday at his residence in Gulzar Houz. Based on his confession, police nabbed his associate Ali Baig from his house in Kalapather and receivers Mohammed Abdul Khaleel of Jahanuma, Shaik Ahmeduddin of Talabkatta and Syed Arshad of Chandrayangutta.
The arrested persons along with the booty were handed over to the SR Nagar police. “We will invoke the PD Act against notorious chain-snatchers who are creating panic among the womenfolk in the city,” the police commissioner said.
