NEW DELHI: The much needed parallel flyover on Rao Tula Ram Marg on Outer Ring Road is set to become a reality with work on the project expected to start this week.
Despite pressure from some residents and a court case to stall the project, PWD is pushing construction. "We successfully conveyed to the court that there were enough entry and exits points for residents living in areas along the flyover and that the project was desperately needed to decongest the stretch.
Work will start this week and end by December 2016," said a senior PWD official.
Three lanes on the stretch will continue to be operational and alternate routes have been identified to take pressure off the main road.
"The direction of traffic on the three lanes will be determined by where construction work is being done. Work will start at both ends of the flyover where piling work will happen. The footpath and service lane will be demolished to accommodate more vehicles," said the official.
Work on expanding the road in front of Army R&R Hospital that will turn left onto Benito Juarez Marg has already begun. In eight months, PWD will create a right turn at the Benito Juarez Marg and Mahatma Gandhi Marg cros- sing near Sri Venkateswara College for people going to south Delhi from IGI airport.
An alternate route has been planned for people headed to Gurgaon or the airport from IIT Delhi. Commuters can take Nelson Mandela Marg up to Vasant Kunj, turn right at the flyover onto Mehrauli-Mahipalpur Road and turn right at the crossing after Ryan International Scho- ol onto a new road constructed by DDA that opens up on NH-8. "From here, those going to Gurgaon can take the existing flyover while those going to the airport can take a U-turn from under the flyover," the official added.
All peripheral work should be completed by PWD within a year, after which it will start work on Benito Juarez Marg. "The stretch between the RTR Marg junction and the Benito Juarez Marg junction is very congested and has been encroached upon. We expect most problems when work starts here. We would like to finish work on creating the right turn on Benito Juarez Marg near Sri Venkateswara College first so that this stretch can be made one way till work is finished," said sources.
