Dominica among top 100 global sustainable destinations

Four leading sustainable tourism organizations have created the world’s first Sustainable Destinations Global Top 100 list and Dominica was one of only three Caribbean destinations to make the cut.

Selection of a destination in the Global Top 100 “aims to recognize tourism destinations that have worked hard to make a difference and take sustainability seriously,” says director Albert Salman of GreenDestinations.info. “Nevertheless, no destination is sustainable for the full 100%. This is why the Top 100 presents ratings of overall destination sustainability according to the only available global assessment tool for this purpose: the Global Sustainable Tourism Review, GSTR.”

It should also be stressed that visiting these destinations does not make a holiday sustainable.

The list is the result of open calls in the social media, followed by a selection process involving 30 international sustainable tourism experts.

Destinations’ performance focused on six key criteria: Nature, Environment, Culture & Tradition, Social well-being, Green Economy and certified Green Tourism Policy.
The latter criterion, corresponding to certification using the GSTC destination criteria, is given the highest weight of all criteria. The Top 100 includes all certified destinations of QualityCoast, Biosphere, and EarthCheck, of which Dominica is EarthCheck benchmarked.

Currently, the Ministry of Tourism and Discover Dominica Authority is a benefiting partner of the Sustainable Destinations Alliance of the Americas (SDAA), helping the destination implement building blocks to ensure a healthy, sustainable, tourism sector. A sustainable destination framework has been established, and it will be validated at a workshop in January 2015. Further to this project, talks have commenced for a Tourism Waste Management project with implementing partner, Sustainable Travel International, and will be aligned with the SDAA project.

The Sustainable Destinations Global Top 100 is an initiative of TravelMole.com, VISION on Sustainable Tourism, Totem Tourism, and Green Destinations. Green Destinations has taken full responsibility for the selection process.

As one of the World’s Greenest Holiday Destinations on Earth, Dominica has much to celebrate and to continue to improve the scores on this list through various sustainable tourism development efforts like the SDAA project.
