Viola Davis Joins Cast Of DC's Suicide Squad

Actress Viola Davis has reportedly landed the role of Amanda Waller in the upcoming Warner Bros/DC movie ‘Suicide Squad.’

This news comes from Latino Review, and if it’s on the money Davis will join a star-studded line-up including Will Smith as Deadshot, Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as the Joker. There have been murmurs that the film may also see Jesse Eisenberg reprise his ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ role of Lex Luthor.

A prolific supporting actress since the mid-1990s, Davis has recently enjoyed prominent roles in ‘The Help’ and ‘Ender’s Game,’ plus TV series ‘How To Get Away With Murder.’

Pitched as ‘The Dirty Dozen’ with superpowers, director David Ayer’s adaptation of the DC comic centres on a secret government scheme which sees incarcerated super-villains sent on black ops missions in exchange for lighter sentences.

Amanda Waller is the government agent running the show - the Nick Fury figure, if you will. The character has appeared in DC cartoon shows ‘Justice League Unlimited’ voiced by CCH Pounder (who also took the role in animated movies ‘Superman/Batman: Public Enemies’ and ‘Batman: Assault on Arkham’), and ‘Young Justice’ voiced by Sheryl Lee Ralph.

Waller has also been featured in DC’s live action TV shows ‘Smallville’ (portrayed by Pam Grier) and ‘Arrow’ (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). Angela Bassett also appeared in the role in 2011’s ‘Green Lantern’ movie.

Other contenders to play Waller in ‘Suicide Squad’ are said to have included Oprah Winfrey and Octavia Spencer.

'Suicide Squad' is lined up for release in August 2016.
