The Tussle between Haryana and Delhi over water continued with the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), on Tuesday announcing that the water level in the Wazirabad pond had fallen. The situation is likely to affect several areas of the capital as the production of potable water supply has gone down by at least 35 per cent, DJB officials said.
In a statement the DJB said, “Due to a fall in water level in the Wazirabad pond, raw water supply to DJB’s water treatment plants at Wazirabad and Chandrawal has been affected.”
As a result, officials said, production of drinking water supply has gone down by more than 35 per cent.
“The availability of water in areas of North and Central Delhi, parts of West Delhi, the NDMC and Walled City will remain affected,” a DJB official said.
According to DJB officials, the issue has been taken up with the Haryana Irrigation department. “We have asked them to release adequate water from the Regulator in Haryana so that the normal level at Wazirabad pond — 674.5 feet — is restored,” a DJB official said.
“Any reduction in the water supply, which results in a drop in the Wazirabad pond level, is a violation of a Supreme Court order,” the official said.
“The matter is being pursued at the top levels of the Delhi government,” the DJB statement said.
