As Dance Captain of Aladdin at The Olympia Theatre in Dublin, Michaela O'Neill knows all about putting your best foot forward this Christmas.

With two shows a day until January 4, the 21-year-old is set to dash from panto to party to celebrate the festive season with family and friends.

But she doesn't need a magic lamp to transform her look from theatrical to downright showstopping.

"Christmas is crazy for me," says Michaela from Dublin, "so clothes that I can dress up to go out after the show are a must.

"For instance, a dress that I can wear into the theatre with black tights and boots in the morning, and then glam up with a statement necklace and killer heels to hit the dancefloor at night."

From rockin' around the Christmas tree to silent nights, here we reveal the top 10 trends to help you sparkle this Christmas, as modelled by Michaela.

1. The Christmas jumper:

As Mark Darcy, Colin Firth is famous for his reindeer one. For a more grown up take on the Christmas geansaí though, think 'vixen' - not Rudolph. Simply layer a sparkly knit over sprayed-on jeans or leggings for a cool yule look. Fine knit is best for not looking like you've scoffed one too many mince pies.

2. The funky tights:

Never mind Black Friday - black tights are the best fashion bargain around this winter. As temperatures tumble, don't forget to stock up on those trusty deniers, which add warmth and depth to any ensemble. To really push the sleigh out though, why not try a pair of Santa-themed tights instead.

3. The desk to dance floor top:

If you're chained to your desk like Bob Cratchit this party season, employ a little 'Scroogenomics' when it comes to your Christmas wardrobe too. Multi-functioning fashion - like a top that works just as well with a pencil skirt as it does with skinny jeans - is the way to ho-ho-go.

Try it: Heatons Gold Trim Tee, €20

4. The winter coat:

Dashing through the snow? Then a snuggly winter coat that goes with just about everything in your wardrobe is a must. For a hint of Hollywood glamour on a Hollystown budget, you can't beat a bit of faux fur. Make it a double whammy in one of this season's swing styles.

5. The day to night bag:

Clever arm candy can help take your look from office to evening in a flash. For the festive party season, an on-trend oversized envelope clutch strikes the perfect balance between an everything-but-the-kitchen sink tote and box clutch barely big enough to stash your lippie.

6. The all-rounder leggings:

When it comes to wrapping up with style, black leggings are up there with black tights. And this season's leather look ones are far from boring. Dress them up with a slinky top to go hell for pleather on the dance floor, and down with a cosy knit to visit your nan.

7. The party dress:

The LBD is back with a bang this party season. To get just as much bang for your buck though, go for one that's business at the front and party at the back - or vice versa - and simply glam it up or down depending on the occasion.

8. The 2-in-1 shoes:

Affectionately known as 'shoots', the ubiquitous shoe boot has a foot in both camps this Christmas: party and professional. And it doesn't take three wise men to figure out that a classic black pair will see you the whole way through the festive season.

Try it: Tesco F&F Patent Trim Heeled Shoeboots, €25

9.The bling:

Superman isn't the only one who can transform his look in seconds. As the party season gets into full swing here, belles will certainly be blinging. Chandelier earrings and eye-catching cuffs are just some of the statement pieces sure to give the Christmas tree a run for its money.

Try it: Oasis Triangle Cascade Drop Earrings, €12

10. The winter must-have:

Wrap up your Christmas wardrobe with one of the year's hottest trends, the blanket cape. Don't worry if Santa can't stretch to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's €1,150 monogrammed Burberry one - there are plenty of budget versions that would make even the Grinch proud.
